How to Add Style to Your Kitchen Design
The kitchen is, first an foremost, a functional space. Most of the design elements that go into it also serve a purpose, from the cabinets, to the appliances, to the countertops. But, if you want more from your kitchen design that straightforward practicality, there are ways to make the design your own and create a kitchen that's reflective of your taste. Here are a few ways to add style to your kitchen design.
Interesting lighting.
There are lots of options when it comes to lighting your kitchen space, so why not choose on that's both pretty and practical? If you opt for recessed lighting, for example, add a few pendant lights above the island or breakfast bar. If you go for flush-mount lighting, choose a fixture with some flair. Have an eat-in kitchen? Hang a bold chandelier above the table.
A unique backsplash pattern.
Backsplashes are quickly booming just as much of a style element of kitchen design as they are a functional element. First, subway tile was the backsplash must-have for an au-courant look but in the last few years, design and material options have evolved. We love glass-panel backsplashes, herringbone patterns, colorful mosaics, and yes, we still have a place in our hearts for subway tile, too.
Fun barstools.
Have a breakfast bar in your kitchen plans? Barstools are just the thing to tie the decor in your kitchen to the style in the rest of your home. From acrylic "ghost stools," to industrial-style drafting stools, to custom versions made with any upholstery and finish you like, there's no doubt you'll be able to find an option that perfectly ties your space together.
On-trend hardware.
Because cabinet hardware is relatively inexpensive and easy to change out, this is one of the few areas where we tell our clients to go with the trends (if they're so inclined!). Lately, on-trend has been synonymous with brass, which warms up the stainless-steel and chrome finishes found on most appliances and kitchen gadgets.
Rugs and art.
Like any other room in the house, kitchens have walls and floors, so why not put them to good use, style-wise? Hang an unexpected art piece where a row of cabinets ends, or lay an oriental runner (a major kitchen design trend of the moment) between the sink and island.
