Boston Kitchen and Bath Renovation: After
Last week, we shared the "before" photos from a total kitchen and bath renovation we did in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston. The existing spaces were dated, cramped, and lacked proper storage and functionality, leading to a frustrated homeowner who was considering a move. The Kitchen
After touring the space and talking extensively with the homeowner, who loved to entertain, the first step to revamping the home was to completely redesign the kitchen to create a more practical, open layout. The sink was moved from its isolated spot into a more central location, the entryway was opened up, soffits were removed to increase ceiling height, laundry was moved into the master suite, and an adjacent bathroom was reconfigured to improve flow in the kitchen. These few small changes made a huge difference in both the look and function of the space, allowing for the addition of a full-height pantry and a dedicated food-prep space.
As for the style of the kitchen, light and bright was the direction: white cabinetry and countertops, and a gray-toned tile backsplash were chosen to help give the room an airy, open feel ... the opposite of the dark space that existed before. Professional-grade appliances and an under-cabinet wine fridge were installed to make entertaining a breeze, and the center of the room was left open to accommodate a crowd.
The Bathroom Storage space (or a lack thereof) and a cramped, dark feel were the major challenges in the bathroom. The room also had to be reconfigured to fit the laundry, which was to be relocated from the kitchen, without making major changes to the plumbing in the space.
To accommodate all of the functional purposes the space would need to serve, as well as achieve the luxurious, retreat-like feel the homeowner was after, creative measures were taken when designing the new bathroom.
To disguise the laundry, a panel-front washer and dryer were installed amidst a wall of matching cabinetry, which also served to greatly improve storage in the space. A frosted-glass walled shower was installed at the center of the room to achieve a light, open feel while also offering privacy, and the seamless vanity was built into the shower surround to provide added shelving.
The final results: a space that the homeowner could love for many more years to come.
