A Kitchen Addition in Newton, Mass.
It's a dilemma many homeowners face. They need more space, yet aren't in the place to move; whether because of financial reasons, children who are still in school, family that lives close-by, or the simple fact that selling a home and moving into a new one can be an incredibly stressful process. The good news is that there is an answer to the problem of needing more space that doesn't involve a real estate agent: Putting an addition on your home. One of our clients recently chose this solution for the home they were outgrowing in Newton, Mass.
The major problem the client faced was a lack of space for a properly functioning kitchen. The original kitchen was cramped and dated, and the homeowners weren't satisfied with options that simply replaced the existing space.
So, we decided to think outside the box, the box in this case being the four walls of their home, and expand the kitchen with a home addition.
Here's a peek at how the kitchen addition turned out.
First, a look at the home from the outside. The addition was placed at the rear.
The exterior wall at the back of the home was extended to account for the extra space.
Inside, the seamless design flows naturally from the older portion of the home.
The addition allowed for a layout that felt open and spacious, and provided ample room for cabinetry to meet the family's storage needs.
While design-wise, the room was grounded in tradition with Shaker-style cabinetry to tie in with the rest of the home. Contemporary fixtures and hardware were added for an updated feel.
The addition even allowed room for one of the homeowner's wishlist items: a built-in wine refrigerator and bar area.
