Trend watch: Two Tone Kitchen Cabinets
In our experience, the kitchen is probably the room in the house that is least susceptible to fluctuating trends. That's because, for one, it's not typically loaded with accent decor or textiles. Plus, most people only remodel their kitchens every 10-20 years, so homeowners typically go for looks that are fairly classic to avoid the risk that their space will look dated in a few years. However, the kitchen isn't completely immune to trends, either. Elements like subway tile, industrial-style lighting, and brass fixtures have become hallmarks of kitchen design done within the last few years. But possibly one of the biggest trends we've seen lately is two-tone kitchen cabinets. Meaning the upper and base cabinets (or sometimes just the island) are each painted a separate shade.
We love the trend for a few reasons.For one, it adds interest to a space that's traditionally a functional one. Plus, it allows cabinetry to really be customized to a home. For example if a contemporary space needs some warmth, upper cabinets can be done in a crisp white shade, while the base ones can be done in a pine or espresso finish.
Among our clients, the most popular combo we see is far and away white and gray. Most homeowners opt for gray base cabinets and white upper cabinets, like the space in the image below.
The color combo feels contemporary and fresh, but the neutral shades ensure the look won't suddenly feel dated a few years down the line.
The two-tone gray and white combo also works equally well in traditional, transitional, or contemporary homes.

Gray and white isn't the only option for two-tone kitchen cabinets, though. For those who prefer a solidly traditional look, an espresso or wood tone finish is also a common choice, like the palette in this classic kitchen in Wellesley.
