Boston Newton Traditional Kitchen In Restored Historical Victorian Home
HISTORICAL RENOVATION MERGES PAST AND PRESENT
Renovating a historic home can be a daunting task, but to get into a desirable neighborhood in a tight real estate market, sometimes renovation is required to breathe new life into a more affordable older home. Such was the case with these Newton homeowners who wisely chose to tackle their renovation with a team of experts: an architect and Divine's designer, Mariette Barsoum, CKD, to make sure no detail was overlooked.
ADDING CONTRAST WITH ENGINEERED STONE COUNTERTOPS
A mix of countertops was selected for the kitchen, with an engineered stone countertop reminiscent of Carrera marble for the L-shaped kitchen. Engineered stone beautifully mimics the appearance of marble, without the added upkeep associated with marble prep areas. For the custom kitchen island, a black marble top with striking white graining was selected, perfectly grounding the lighter aspects of the color scheme.
HIGH TECH KITCHEN ISLAND RECALLS THE PAST
The high-tech kitchen island draws its inspiration from the farmhouse table of years past, while boasting wireless wall switches and outlets that are pure 21st century. The Divine team evoked the traditional feel of this space by adding custom Shaker-style decorative legs. The island matches the historic feel of the main cabinetry selection, while the countertop and stools give it modern sophistication. Using the wall switches on the kitchen island, you can control every lighting source in the kitchen from a central location.
A CUSTOM ENTERTAINMENT UNIT WITH APPLIANCE GARAGES
To give the space interest and function, the custom entertaining unit was created with a rich quarter-sawn oak in a chocolate finish. It houses the pantry and paneled refrigerator, as well as two appliance garages for tucking away gadgets when not in use. However, the real jewel of this custom piece is the double panel of stained glass that forms the back of the glass-front center cabinets. The owner had a keen interest in integrating this original detail into the design, so the Divine team created the layout around the custom entertaining unit, which allowed the glass to be admired from both the kitchen and the formal dining room.
BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER WITH MINI TILE
To bridge the historical and the modern, a modern, crackle glaze mini tile backsplash was used. The green iridescent tiles elegantly pull together the rest of the colors in the space. The effect of mini tile for the space is perfect, providing a hint of color without overwhelming the eye. Other accents, such as a modern take on the traditional farmhouse sink, give the design perfect balance between the former age and the modern.
