3 Factors that Most Affect a Kitchen Renovation Cost

If you're planning a kitchen renovation, one of the biggest things on your mind is likely the cost. How much money it will take to bring your current space from outdated to cutting-edge. Generally speaking, renovating an entire kitchen will rarely cost less than $15,000-$20,000 even with the most budget product, but costs can easily span upward of $100,000-$200,000 for high-end finishes, top-of-the-line appliances and custom design. While there are hundreds of options and add ons that can affect your bottom line, there are three major factors that will most affect your kitchen renovation cost. They are....

Size.

The size of your kitchen is the single biggest determinant in the cost of your kitchen renovation. Things like flooring, and backsplash and countertop materials are typically priced per square foot, and the more square feet of space you have, the more materials it will take to outfit that space. Most backsplash tile ranges in price from $5 per square foot for a simple subway or hex tile, to $20 + for marble or luxury stone tile, for example.

Layout.

Any time you alter the layout of a room, especially one with extensive plumbing and electric like a kitchen, cost go up. Relocating plumbing, reconfiguring structural elements of a room, or adding electricity where there wasn't any before (like to an island) will raise costs quickly. If the changes you want to make to your kitchen are mostly cosmetic, consider leaving the layout as is to save money.

Custom vs. Spec.

There are a million ways to design a kitchen: but most of those million options are going to involve custom design. There are far fewer options for spec kitchens, but they're much more budget-friendly. Custom design includes everything from choosing a non-standard paint color for your cabinets, to having cabinet height extended to reach your ceiling, to detailed millwork on your island, to choosing a granite slab from a quarry to turn into a countertop. Custom design will always cost more, but if you are after a top-of-the-line kitchen, customizations will be inevitable.
