Lighting Options For Your Closet

Redesigning your closet? While you're in the midst of choosing wood finishes, shelving, and storage systems, don't forget to think about lighting. Not only is it one of the most important elements to consider in order to create a functional closet space, it can also add a dose of fun and style to the design, too. Here's what you need to know about deciphering lighting options for your closet.

Start with ambient light. Ambient light is your main light source, and typically installed in the ceiling. While a singular light fixture in the center of the space will work well for a small closet, in a large walk in, consider installing can or recessed lights spaced three to four feet apart for optimal illumination.

Layer in task lighting. If your closet is outfitted with deep drawers, shelving and cabinets, task lighting is a must. One of our favorite options? Back-lit shelves, which are not only practical, but beautiful, too. Or, try track lighting for a simple, effective fix.

Go decorative. If you're going more for a plush dressing room than a simple closet, you'll want to look at lighting from a decorative perspective, too. Adding an unexpected light fixture, like a glamorous chandelier or flush mount ceiling fixture can transform the space from functional to fun.
