Options for Hiding Kitchen Outlets
It goes without saying that the kitchen is one of the hardest-working spaces in the home: a place where toast is toasted, coffee is brewed, and cakes are mixed. Given that so much of this hard work is powered by the dozens of appliances most of us have in our homes, having an ample amount of kitchen outlets to plug everything into is one of the most fundamentally important elements of a good kitchen design (something we covered more in-depth, here). But that doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice the aesthetics of the space, either, with outlets everywhere ruining the uniform backsplash or custom kitchen island. The solution is to simply hide the outlets in plain sight. Here are three options for hiding kitchen outlets.
Choose Pop Up Outlets
Pop-up outlets are installed directly into a countertop or surface, most commonly on the kitchen island where there is no wall nearby. Pop-up outlets are one of our favorite solutions for contemporary spaces since they feel high-tech and cutting edge, and help to maintain the streamlined look of a modern space.
Cover Them Up.
If you prefer to keep outlets off of your countertops, another excellent solution is to install single outlets fitted with painted covers. They fit directly into the outlet itself (just like the childproofing plugs), and can be painted in any color to match your cabinetry, wall color, or backsplash.
Choose Electrical Plates Accordingly.
If you aren't planning a kitchen remodel and simply want to retrofit your existing space, or you're just looking for the easiest and least expensive solution, your best bet is to swap out your outlet plates for ones in the same shade as the surface they're mounted on. In the kitchen above, we used espresso electrical plates that matched the stain on the island, which helps the outlets to blend in.
Hide Outlets in a Drawer.
One of our favorite solutions for creating a charging station for small devices is to hide a power strip in a drawer or cabinet. This way, the devices, the charging cords, and the electrical outlets are concealed.
