Scary Kitchen Design Trends of the Past

Halloween is at the end of the week, and in honor of fright night, we thought we'd put together a list of one of the scariest things we see in our line of work: bad kitchen design trends of the past. Here are a few of the most terrifying offenders. Linoleum flooring. Popular in the 70s, 80s and early 90s as a budget-friendly alternative to tile, linoleum flooring finally went the way of feathered hair and hammer pants before the new millennium, and we couldn't be happier that this old trend has been put to rest. Do you remember walking into kitchens with soft pink plastic-y flooring? And the way  it used to peel up at the corners after a few years of wear and tear? We shudder just thinking about it.

Allover wallpaper. Another trend we're happy to say rest in peace to? The wallpaper look. Sure, there are plenty of great ways to use wallpaper in kitchen design today, but  very few of them involve ditsy floral prints or carriage scenes that match the color of the kitchen cabinetry.

Wood-trimmed kitchen cabinets. A classic sign of 1980s design? White kitchen cabinets with wooden trim. While we love the two-tone look for kitchen cabinets, this is certainly not an execution of the idea we'd like to see return any time soon.

Mustard yellow appliances. Where there is now stainless steel, there was once mustard yellow, a signature shade in the 1970s color palette trio that also included pea green and rusty orange. An update we love for today? Retro inspired ranges in candy-colored lacquer like red and mint green.
